2011 50m course details

The Sun Mountain 50 mile course will be nearly all single track or double track dirt roads and take place at and near the Sun Mountain Trail Systems in Winthrop, Wa. The course will have about 7000ft of elevation gain--about half of the gain from 4 significant climbs and the other half from numerous small climbs(200ft or less). The course will pass mountain lakes, go through old forests and run out in the open shrub-steppe landscape filled with sagebrush and blooming balsam root flowers. There will be numerous views of the Methow River Valley, the North Cascades, Chelan Sawtooths, and Okanogan Mountain Ranges.

The 2011 Sun Mountain Trail Races

After having the races in April the first year and June the 2nd year the 3rd annual Sun Mountain Trail Races will now be moving to May-- Sunday May 22 to be exact. Hopefully this will be the permanent date for the race from now on.

One great thing about moving the race to May will be that the "sunflowers" (Balsam Root) will be in full bloom! And the weather is usually perfect(not too hot, not too cold) in May at the elevations the races take place at (2000-3800ft).

The Date will not be the only change, The 50m course will no longer be a point to point but will now be a loop course that starts and finishes at Sun Mountain like all the other courses--50m course will run the same exact route as the 50k(which will be almost exactly the same as last year but the first and last few miles of the race will be different) plus will do an additional 19 mile "lollipop" style route in the same area of the second half of MVSTA's Sunflower Trail Marathon. This change will eliminate all the road running the 50m runners had to do last year to go from the Twisp River Trail to the Sun Mountain Trail System--it also means the 50m runners won't have to take a bus to the start anymore!

If you're coming from Seattle/Bellingham/Vancouver you'll probably take Hwy 20(North Cascades Hwy) East from I-5 to get to Winthrop. If you're coming from Tacoma or South of there(Olympia/Portland/Etc.) you'll probably want to take Hwy 18 East to I-90 and go over Snoqualmie Pass, Blewett Pass(Hwy 97) and follow the Columbia River North to the Methow Valley which means you'll get to Sun Mountain via Twsip(but you can always go over the North Cascades Hwy instead if you want but you risk hitting Seattle traffic). If you're coming from anywhere East of the mountains(Eastern BC, Spokane, Tri-cities, ID, MT, Yakima, Ellensburg, Wenatchee, etc.) you'll get to Sun Mountain via Twsip.

driving directions from winthrop:
from the four-way stop sign in downtown winthrop go east on hwy 20 about a half mile and turn right after crossing the bridge onto twin lakes rd. follow twin lakes road about 3 miles to patterson lake rd and turn right. follow patterson lake rd about 5 1/4 miles to chickadee trailhead/thompson ridge rd and turn left twice into the parking lot. chickadee trailhead is the finish for the 50 miler and the start/finish for all the other races. allow 20-25 minutes for drive time and watch out for deer!

The Sun Mountain 1km course will be all trail and will be on the Chickadee Loop Trail at the Sun Mountain Trail System in Winthrop, Wa. The course will have about 40ft of elevation gain so it'll be pretty flat but not totally. The loop route will be in the forest and will start and finish at the same place as all the other races and the 25k and 50k runners will be there to cheer for the kids as they finish!

Course Info:
All of these courses are on the trails at Sun Mountain (the 50 miler also runs on the trails and dirt roads between Sun Mountain and the town of Twsip). For the most part the trails are well maintained no too technical and fast. And most of the climbs are gradual. The 50 miler has about 7000ft of elevation gain so it'll be a pretty fast course(for a mountain trail 50m), the 50k has about 6000ft elevation and will still be a semi-fast course (not super fast but not slow either) thanks to the smooth trails and the 25k just has one big climb and only 2500ft of gain so once that's done it'll be a fast 2nd half. Kids 1k is a little hilly but won't be too hard. More details: 50m, 50k, 25k, 1k

Drop Bags:
Runners can have their own gear transported by race volunteers to all of the aid stations(except aid 1 and 2 for the 50 miler). Please label your drop bags with your name and bib number.

Lodging:
The River Run Inn The Chewuch Inn and Sun Mountain Lodge are great options. For other options check out the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce or Central Reservations.

Camping:
There are lots of options for nice tent camping all over the place around here. The Forest Service has nice campgrounds on hwy 20 just west of Mazama--Early Winters Campgound is the closest to the race of those. A little closer the race are a couple of private campgrounds and a state park(Pearrygin Lake), the River Bend Campground in Twisp is popular with some runners. You could also camp at the Thompson Pass aid station for free but it's not an official site and there's no water or bathrooms or anything.

Weather:
Located on the sunny and dry side of the state there's a good chance the sky will be clear and blue. The average temperatures for the start are in high 40s for the 50m and in the 60s or 70s for the other races and by midday it'll likely be in the 70's or low 80's-- perfect running weather! But this is the mountains so anything is possible...

Post Race Meal/Party:
We'll agian have yummy local food(East 20 Pizza) and drinks(including beer from Methow Valley Brewing Company)after the race for everyone(including friends and family). We'll also do some random prize drawings. And we'll have live bluegrass music from the Blackberry Bushes String Band!

2010 Preliminary Results

The following results are just preliminary, most likely there will be changes! Also unfortunately some of the top runners in both the 50k and 25k lost time, ran extra distance and in a couple cases got so off course they were not able to get an official finish-- this was entirely my fault not theirs and unfortunately it skews the results. Also it is possible a few of 50 mile and 50km finishers missed the small loop that went up the Moose Trail, through the Sun Mountain Lodge parking lot and along the ridge on the Kraule Trail, inadvertantly giving them a 3.7 mile shortcut. This too was my fault. I should have had a bigger sign and or a course marshall at such a key intersection.

The second annual Sun Mountain Trail Races will be held Sunday June 20 2010 in Winthrop, Wa. These running races take full advantage of the fun and fast Sun Mountain Trails. The views of the Methow Valley, North Cascades and Chelan Sawtooths make the distance well worth all the effort. And if running (nearly) every single trail at Sun Mountain isn't enough for you the brand new 50 mile option adds the entire Twisp River Trail to the scenic adventure! In partnership with MVSTA and Sun Mountain Lodge we're proud to bring you the only ultra in the Methow Valley, where year round the sun shines an average of 5 out of 7 days.

How can you run for free you ask?

By bringing a friend or family member to work an aid station or by volunteering at one of the other Rainshadow Running events.

You'll get a free entry in the race which includes 1 ticket for the prize drawings, transportation to the start(for 50 mile runners) and admission to the post race meal/party and your friend or family member will get admission to the post race meal/party and a ticket for the prize drawings. A race shirt can be purchased when you register online.

Course Info:
All of these courses are on the trails at Sun Mountain (the 50 miler also runs on the Twisp River Trail and on some dirt forest service rd and about 3 miles on pavement). For the most part the trails are well maintained no too technical and fast. And most of the climbs are gradual. The 50 miler has about 8000ft of elevation gain so it'll be a pretty fast course, the 50k has about 6000ft elevation and will still be a semi-fast course (not super fast but not slow either) thanks to the smooth trails and the 25k just has one big climb and only 2500ft of gain so once that's done it'll be a fast 2nd half. Drop Bags:
Runners can have their own gear transported by race volunteers to all of the aid stations(except aid 1 for the 50 miler). Please label your drop bags with your name and bib number.

50 Miler Transport to Start:
50 mile runners will park at the finish (Chickadee Trailhead at Sun Mountain) and will be bussed to the 50 mile start at or near the end of Twisp River Rd. in the morning at 5am for the early starters and 6am for the regular start. All the other races start and finish at the same place, Chickadee Trailhead.

Carpooling:
Please consider all the benefits(financial, social, environmental, etc.) of carpooling and try to find buddies to share the drive with to and from the race. Driving Directions:

Lodging:
The River Run Inn the last time i spoke with them had a few rooms left.
The Chewuch Inn and Sun Mountain Lodge are two good options. For other options check out the Winthrop Chamber of Commerce or Central Reservations.

Camping:
There are lots of options for nice tent camping all over the place around here. The Forest Service has nice campgrounds on hwy 20 just west of Mazama--Early Winters Campgound is the closest to the race of those. A little closer the race are a couple of private campgrounds and a state park(Pearrygin Lake), the River Bend Campground in Twisp is popular with some runners. You could also camp at the Thompson Pass aid station for free but it's not an official site and there's no water or bathrooms or anything.

Weather:
Located on the sunny and dry side of the state there's a good chance the sky will be clear and blue. The average temperatures for the start are in high 40s or low 50s for the 50m and in the 60s or 70s for the other races and by midday it'll likely be in the high 70's or low 80's-- perfect running weather! But this is the mountains so anything is possible... here's a link to the forecast

Post Race Meal/Party:
We'll agian have yummy local food and drinks after the race for everyone(including friends and family). We'll also do some random prize drawings.

Course Mileages and Aid Station Locations:
I've tweaked the courses a little bit this week to make sure the distances are accurate. I measured each course with a professional grade GPS device and got 50.2 miles for the 50 miler, 31.1 for the 50k and 15.7 for the 25k. I'll try to get the adjusted maps, profiles and course descriptions up on the website tonite but the ones that are up there already are almost exactly the same as the new ones since I only made small changes. Below is a list of the new aid station distances for each race.

Atleast $5 from each entry fee will be set aside to be donated to the Twisp Valley Grange.

Course Info:
All of these courses are on the trails at Sun Mountain (the 50 miler also runs on the trails and dirt roads between Sun Mountain and the town of Twsip). For the most part the trails are well maintained no too technical and fast. And most of the climbs are gradual. The 50 miler has about 7000ft of elevation gain so it'll be a pretty fast course(for a mountain trail 50m), the 50k has about 6000ft elevation and will still be a semi-fast course (not super fast but not slow either) thanks to the smooth trails and the 25k just has one big climb and only 2500ft of gain so once that's done it'll be a fast 2nd half. Kids 1k is a little hilly but won't be too hard. More details: 50m, 50k, 25k, 1k

Drop Bags:
Runners can have their own gear transported by race volunteers to all of the aid stations(except aid 1 and 2 for the 50 miler). Please label your drop bags with your name and bib number.

Carpooling:
Please consider all the benefits(financial, social, environmental, etc.) of carpooling and try to find buddies to share the drive with to and from the race. I am sorry. I feel lucky things weren’t worse than they were. I barely survived as it was and even weeks later I still get a sinking feeling in my stomach when I think back to how things went on race day. We’ve all had our bad days out there and usually later we get to brag to our buddies over beer and burgers on how we overcame all the obstacles to make it to the finish line or trailhead. I’ve had my fair share of harrowing trail adventures, one even required a search party of forest service employees, where in the midst of them I’ve cussed at myself for getting myself into such situations, for not being better equipped for the weather, for pressing on despite the sun lowering on the horizon, for not bringing enough food or water or electrolytes or all three, for venturing out on to steep, icy slopes without protection… I could go on. I’ve always made it out alive. Maybe a little lighter around the waist or a little grayer in the beard. And I’ve always bragged afterwards, relishing in the attention. But this time it’s different.

The difference this time was that my bad decisions, procrastinations, and over estimation of my abilities not only affected me all alone out in the mountains but also negatively affected the runners and volunteers in the Sun Mountain 50M/50K/25K/1K. As Race Director I believe it is my first responsibility to see to the safety of the runners, volunteers and spectators. I see everything else involved in directing a race as secondary. Yet through a dangerous combination of procrastination and believing I could do most of the pre-race preparations myself and some last minute setbacks prior to the race and race morning we wound up with a dynamic situation that easily could’ve been much worse than it turned out in the end.

At 5:00 am as I was driving the four early starters out to the starting line up at the head of Twisp River Valley I considered cancelling the races. I knew how precarious the situation was and I was worried I would not be able to get the course marked in time but in the end I felt I had enough time-- the areas that still needed to be marked were at the tail end of the races. Yet as the day unfolded with the 50 mile early and regular starters on their way, new wrenches were being thrown in the works. I won’t get into the details but more than a couple things went awry and in the end it resulted in some of the fastest runners from the 50 m, 50 km and 25 km getting to sections of their courses before I got them marked. This sent runners off course costing them time and in some cases their leading positions. Or in some cases it gave some runners unintended shortcuts which resulted in them being disqualified(even though it wasn’t their fault). This could’ve been much worse if even just one of those runners gotten truly lost.

There were other mistakes that I made that made for a less than enjoyable race for the runners aswell. There was a section for the 50 km and 50 m runners, late in the race, that was probably too long between aid stations and there were sections of the trail that were marked but should have been marked even better, one of which resulted in an unidentifiable number of the ultrarunners missing a three mile loop that had no course marshall or check point.

All of this created a situation where to no fault of their own the 25 km leader just one mile from the finish got off course and it cost him the win, where some if not all of the top runners in the 25 km,50km and 50 m lost time, ran extra distance and in two cases resulted in DQ’s, and due to the possibility of numerous 50 km and 50 m runners from the front to the back accidentally skipped three miles of the course the results are basically a mess and impossible to verify their accuracy.

I feel like I really dropped the ball. A race should be safe, fun, well marked, well supported, challenging, and the results should be accurate and posted timely. This was not the case and it was my fault. Again, I am sorry. Any runner that for any reason is unhappy or unsatisfied with this race because of these errors on my part are welcome and encouraged to ask me for a full refund or complimentary entry in a future Rainshadow Running race.
